San Juan Chamula

Chiapas, Mexico

One of the most interesting religious experiences I’ve ever witnessed. The church of San Juan Chamula is a mix of Catholic and Mayan beliefs.

It looks like a normal church from the outside, but inside there are no benches and instead there are flowers everywhere and pine grass all over the floor. Worshippers engage in rituals that involve Catholic saints, moonshine, animal sacrifice and pox (a local alcoholic drink) among other things.

The church was formed as a compromise around the year 1600 between the Spanish conquerors and the locals who were unwilling to let go of their own beliefs.

Definitely a place worth visiting if you find yourself in San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas.

Keep in mind that photographs are strictly prohibited inside the church!
