March 2022
It’s been just over a week (11th March 2022) since the world’s first millennial president, Gabriel Boric, was sworn in.
At 36 years old, the left-wing leader heralds a fresh start for many in Chile. But despite him officially taking the role and bringing in new hope, this did not stop a few hundred people from protesting – just as they do every Friday – against the previous regime and the perceived injustices that came with it.
Make no mistake, the numbers of protestors (well over a million people took to the streets of Santiago at the peak of the demonstrations in late 2019) maybe dwindling, but the feeling of disdain by many towards the previous government of Sebastián Piñera remains strong.
The 2019/2020 protests, which went on for several months, left about 30 people dead and a trail of destruction around the Chilean capital.
