May Day

Berlin, Germany

May 2022

May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day or Labour Day, is celebrated in several countries around the world and draws attention to the importance of the workers’ movement.

In Berlin, the day is renowned just as much for its booze-fueled street parties, as for the the rallies and protests that take place throughout the city. This year’s protests also focused on the rights of transgender and immigrant workers, with 30,000 protestors estimated to have taken part.

Although most of the day demonstrations passed by peacefully, some skirmishes broke out after dark after protestors threw bottles and firecrackers at police, who in turn wielded batons and used pepper spray.

354 arrests were made – mostly for physical assaults and trespassing – and almost 100 police officers were injured.
