El Antiguo Cafetal Angerona

Las Terrazas, Cuba

I needed to take one bus, one horse cart and hitchhike twice to get here but it was definitely worth it. One of the most authentic places I saw during my time in Cuba.

El Antiguo Cafetal Angerona was one of Cuba’s earliest coffee farms – from the early 19th century – where 450 slaves used to work and live. The ruins of the farm are still relatively well preserved and you can also visit the dilapidated slave barracks. The fact that the place is so difficult to reach meant that during my hour and a half there I didn’t see a single other person which simply added to the eerie atmosphere in the grounds. A place that gives you a different insight into Cuba’s complicated past.

The last two pictures are from the nearby eco village of Las Terrazas.
