Castellers – The Catalan tradition of human towers

Barcelona, Spain

Dating back over 300 years and representing one of the biggest expressions of Catalan culture, Castellers can be found at practically any major celebration around the region of Catalunya.

Originating from the word castells (castles), these human towers must faithfully uphold the motto of “Força, equilibri, valor i seny” (Strength, balance, courage and common sense) in order to be successful. The stronger and stockier members of the group always make up the base of the tower, while the lightest member – often a child – has to be agile, fast and brave to climb to the top. The tradition bases itself around the idea of trust, as without the full confidence and belief in your team, the structure can easily break down.

In November 2010, Castellers were declared as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
