Berlin Pride 2022

Berlin, Germany

Hundreds of thousands took to the street of the German capital on Saturday to attend the city’s annual Pride celebration.

Running since 1979, Pride has for years championed not just LGBTIQ rights, but also those of equality, human rights and anti discrimination. This year’s pride was themed “United in Love. Against hatred, war and discrimination.”

After being cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic and then regulated heavily in 2021 for the same reason, this year’s celebration was always going to attract the masses, with people from not just around Germany, but the whole of Europe making their way to Berlin for the event.

In many cities, Pride is also known as Christopher Street Day or CSD for short. The name hails from the New York location of the Stonewall Inn, where on 28th July 1969, police held a violent raid, leading to mass demonstrations of gay and lesbian New Yorkers against police violence.

It is estimated that over 150,000 attended the parade itself this year, while around half a million people were at the event at some point during the day.

Meanwhile, Germany’s federal parliament, the Bundestag, raised the six colored striped rainbow flag for the first ever time, representing the diversity of the community and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender.
