Around 10,000 people are said to have hit the streets of the capital this weekend, just 7 days after the Cypriot police heavy-handedly broke up peaceful demonstrations against corruption and the Covid measures taken by the government.
Thankfully, both civilians and police were on their best behaviour as the demonstration passed without incident. Civilians chanted anti-governmental slogans, with most, if not all the people in attendance wearing face masks and trying to keep social distancing as best as possible under the circumstances.
The island has been in hard lockdown since December, with shops only just beginning to reopen. Restaurants and bars remain closed, deeply impacting an important part of the island’s economy.
Meanwhile, Cyprus has also recently been rocked by the Al-Jazeera documentary regarding the government’s alleged involvement in the controversial “Golden Passport” scheme.
